ABSTRACT:

At the end of 2020, the German government announced a massive €4 billion budget to support research projects addressing global warming and sustainability under its FONA (Forschung für Nachhaltigkeit) strategy over the coming five years. China’s new five-year plan, released this March, confirms the country’s commitment to sustainability including peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Covid-19 has demonstrated that scientific collaboration plays a critical role in tackling complex challenges. In the same vein, environmental problems require a diversity of solutions based on scientific insights. Guided by its Sustainability Action Plan: A Global ZJU for Social Good (Z4G), Zhejiang University is working to enhance sustainability-related education, research and operations through a variety of programmes and activities, such as the inaugural Sino-German Sustainable Development Forum (SGF).

For the roundtable discussion, Ms. Ruth Schimanowski, Chief Representative of DAAD China, will speak with 6 leading scholars and top managers about their views on the sustainability associated with their own academic or industrial backgrounds. Together, they will discuss how their respective institutions commit to sustainability goals and how academia and industry could work together on this global topic.
