The 12th edition of Computing+ Seminar was held on February 26, 2023. Professor Huashu Dou from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, China, presented his work Existence and Smoothness of Solutions of Navier-Stokes Equation and Mechanism of Turbulence Generation. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Anxiong Liu, Research Fellow from Computing+ Engineering Laboratory, Shanghai Institute for Advanced Study, Zhejiang University (SIAS ZJU). Professor Ruhong Zhou, Director of the Institute, Professor Luo Kun, Deputy Director of the Institute, together with young researchers participated in the seminar on site, and researchers from Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University etc, joint the seminar online.

Professor Dou proposed the energy gradient theory to study the problem of turbulence. He believed that turbulence transition or turbulence generation was caused by the singularity of Navier-Stokes equation, which was induced by velocity discontinuity, while fully developed turbulence was composed of numerous singular points in the flow field. Professor Dou stated that the theory had been verified by various experimental results and numerical simulations. He further pointed out that since the flow variables were not differentiable at the singularity, the Navier-Stokes equation had no smooth solution in the global domain. Professor Dou applied such theory to study the flow stability and turbulent transition of canonical problems in fluid mechanics. To generalize, the necessary and sufficient condition for turbulence generation/turbulent transition was that the singularity of Navier-Stokes equation, i.e., the discontinuity of velocity, appears in the flow field.

The audience showed great interest in Professor Dou's lecture and asked questions during the Q&A session. Professor Dou patiently answered all questions and engaged in an intense discussion with audiences onsite and online. The seminar was a success and continues the tradition of the Computing+ seminar series.
